Radiographic testing records results on photographic film or sensitized paper by exposing it to radiation that passes through the part. The level of attenuation depends on material thickness and density, so the exposed film or paper forms a radiograph that reveals internal features and flaws. This makes radiography a permanent record of the internal state of the component. Other methods don’t use film to capture an image of the interior: ultrasonic testing images reflections on a display or recorder, magnetic particle testing shows surface or near-surface leakage with magnetic indications, and liquid penetrant testing reveals surface flaws with dye visible on the surface.
